Like a Thief in the Night

Like a Thief in the Night

Author: Bob Morris
Caribbean science fiction? The genre is certainly a narrow one, but Nalo Hopkinson, a native of Jamaica who has also lived in Guyana and Trinidad, is staking her claim as one of its most notable authors.

Private Equity Fund Of Funds In her most recent work - Midnight Robber(Warner Books, $13.95) - Hopkinson takes us to Toussaint, a planet colonized by Caribbean refugees. In this techno-driven future world, the inhabitants are watched over by the great and all-powerful Anansi (those familiar with Caribbean folklore will recognize Anansi as the spider-trickster who appears in many tales that have been handed down during the centuries). The parallel between the two is an apt one since Toussaint is a planet so completely wired to the Web that all its residents have computer chips implanted in their brains, allowing Anansi to keep them safe, happy and out of harm's way - but also letting her monitor their every move.

FF&P Private Equity provides its clients with the opportunity to invest in the equity of high growth, unquoted companies whose objective is to generate attractive returns through the subsequent listing, or trade sale, of these companies. FF&P Private Equity invests typically â5 million to â25 million of equity per transaction and places particular emphasis on backing commercial managers with a track record in successful execution of business plans and enhancing shareholder value. //www.ffandp. equity.

Curve Equity Exposed Fund It's not a bad existence, actually. Toussaint is a happy place where the houses are comfortable, the people well-fed, and Caribbean traditions, such as Carnival, form the center of the planet's peaceful culture. But then the story's protagonist - a teen-age girl named Tan-Tan - is forced to leave her life of luxury when her father is exiled to the parallel world of New Half-Way Tree, a prison colony. The brain chips don't work there, meaning Tan-Tan is thrust into a lawless land where she must fight to survive against monstrous creatures from Caribbean folklore - beasts such as the rolling calf and the half-bird, half-human douen - that are suddenly all too real.

Equity Income Funds It's your basic stranger in a strange land premise, but Hopkinson enriches the tale with her ability to turn the mythology of the Caribbean into what is sometimes a delightful vision of Eden and, at other times, an inter-planetary chamber of tropical horrors. It takes a few pages to adapt to the singsong dialect, ripe with idioms and nuance, but once that minor hurdle is behind, the story moves swiftly along. And those who love the language of the Caribbean will follow the journey of Tan-Tan - who adopts the persona of a Carnival Robber Queen to fashion her way in this weird world - with breathless delight.

Viridian, the holding company for Northern Ireland's electricity, is in talks over a .62billion bid by Bahraini private equity firm Arcapita Bank.
